Sports have become prevalent carriers of media messages in American culture to the extent that most people do not even notice their presence. Have students stand up if they are wearing a media message. Once the first round rises, remind them that a media message is any logo or brand name that is visible to their neighbors. Have them check their clothing, their shoes and their book bags and pencil cases. Ninety eight percent of your students will be standing. Now have them sit and table talk about why this might matter. How could this translate to the acquisition of information? What steps can we take to become more savvy consumers of information?
