Happy Pi Day
David M Schwartz

Everyone loves pie - but does everyone love pi?  David Schwartz will help our students to understand and appreciate the true nature of pi!
English/Language Arts
Explore the multiple meaning words and homophone/homonyms
Have your students take a close look at Author Schwartz's use of the word irrational in the first paragraph.  Ask them why he chose this word.  Once they understand the dual meaning intended by the choice, introduce the idea of intentional dual meaning and explore it in other places in literature.    FOr older students, introduce the definition of the double entendre.

Social Studies
Explore the invention of holidays
For just about any day of the year, you can find some country or culture that has a reason to celebrate.  Just what goes into the making of a holiday? How do we come up with them, and who decides? Send your students searching for the elements that determine holidays in a culture, and then challenge them to create one of their own, complete with a persuasive argument about why it should become a national holiday!

STEM
Explore pi in mathematics, physics AND engineering
Author Schwartz tells readers that pi is incredible useful in these three disciplines.  Have your students search for examples of the use of pi and chart them. How many examples can they find?

Explore irrational numbers
What’s the difference between rational and irrational numbers?  Pi Day is the perfect time to reinforce this concept. Look at this explanation from Fact Monster.  FOr younger students, explore the rational number and rates and ratios.  For older students take a look at some other famous irrationals, like the golden ratio, 𝞅, or Euler’s number, e.  What do these irrationals have in common?  Where can we find them in nature?

Research Skills
Explore Pi Day Activities
Discover the treasure trove of ideas for Pi Day activities in your classroom.  Look at the lesson plans in Education World, or look at Holidappy’s varied list. Of course, a one stop trip to Teach Pi might yield exactly the right kind of celebration for your classroom.
