A Raindrop Quiz

I don’t have a category for this and I refuse to make one.  I love this Minute, and I don’t want to say this, but... you can always use this to setup a “test preparation” lesson.  There, I’m done.  Do what you must.  But don’t miss the real opportunities this Minute presents.
English/Language Arts
Explore text structure
Kids hate quizzes - especially pop quizzes.  But here’s a quiz that has all the answers, with explanations and everything!  Have a jeopardy kind of day and have your students write the questions while you sit back and, well, guide them through it!  How do you write a nonfiction informational piece and structure it like a quiz (specialized question and answer)?  Model it after Author Siy - she has written us all a mentor text, er, quiz.  Don’t forget to have the kids insert some humor.  Every quiz should be so much fun!

Explore biography
The physics principles mentioned in this Minute are connected to some pretty heavy hitters in the historical world.  Use this Minute to explore the biography section of your school library on the hunt for Archimedes and Sir Isaac Newton.  Bet you find them!

STEM
Explore physics - forces: buoyancy and gravity and drag
Need an anticipatory set when you introduce your students to buoyancy, gravity and drag  - the triumvirate force concepts?  Author Siy has handed it to you in a fun package.  Now go scout out some experiments to test these principles with your kids in the classroom or the bathtub!

Research Skills
Explore communicating findings
Writing an article in quiz format is one way to talk about buoyancy and gravity and drag.  Another way to do this is with a visual.  Use this Minute to explore how to create visuals to communicate information effectively.  You can go as low tech as a piece of paper and a box of crayons, or as high tech as Google Drawings or CorelDraw.  Whatever you and your students choose, you can reinforce the importance of labels, and the interplay between text and visuals to communicate ideas.
