When a Jet Wore a Costume

Aviation is always a hit with students.  Amy Nathan has written a Minute that will excite them all!

Social Studies
Explore the role of aviation in WWII
  • Use this Minute as an anticipatory set to talk about the role of transportation in war.  Did access to jet technology change the course of the war?  Use timelines and maps to overlay the use of certain transportation technologies with the countries that developed those technologies.
Explore the historical role of women in war
  • The author finished this Minute by dropping a bombshell about who was testing this US jet.  Where else were women active in WWII?  How did their roles change during the course of the war?  What are some of the factors that brought about this change?  There are lots of great critical thinking questions sparked when reading this Minute.  Give your students some space to come up with some more great questions and exercise their brains!

STEM
Explore the Newton’s third law
  • For every action, there is an equal and opposite reaction.  This Minute is a great one to introduce Newton’s Laws, the concept of thrust, or other facets of aerodynamics.  Use this as a fascinating introduction to some really big ideas.

Research Skills
Explore questioning skills
  • Tap into the critical thinking exercises in the Social Studies section and teach students how to develop good researchable questions.
