Explore writing history
Students probably don’t think a lot of their history textbooks. They are not bringing them home for pleasure reading! Use this Minute to get students excited about reading AND writing history. Have them take a closer look at how Author McClafferty gets them hooked. She starts in the present, with an experience that is common to most readers. She puts the reader front and center before bringing them back in time. Have your students experiment with writing about the past by starting with the present and see if they like the outcome!

Explore boolean searching
Boolean searching is a method of conducting online searches using the operators AND, OR and NOT. While search engines like Google and BING process natural language and have algorithms that excel at figuring out what most searchers are seeking, subscription databases require a fair amount of practice and skill to extract the right information. Teaching students to use advanced search features or to use the Boolean operators AND, OR and NOT in their database searches will greatly increase their chances of success. For more information, check out this useful guide from MIT Libraries. Once your students get the hang of these Boolean operators, have them create some search strings to explore the history of sports and injuries.
