Dorothy loves exploring the natural world and learning how everything is connected. She grew up in Rochester Minnesota and Marin County California and was lucky to be about to explore the natural world close by. She received a BA in biology from Stanford University and a PhD. in zoology from the University of California Berkeley. She married fellow grad student Greg Patent and has spent her life sharing her passion for nature with readers through her books and magazine articles. With their two sons David and Jason now grown up and with their own families, Dorothy and Greg enjoy their lives living across the road from public lands near Missoula, Montana, featuring more than 40 miles of mountain and meadow trails to explore. Traveling to other natural areas and learning from scientists about their work, then sharing what she has discovered, are also favorite adventures.

The more she learns, the more she realizes how much our human actions affect the natural world.  Our activities pour carbon dioxide into the environment, affecting the climate. We breed plants and animals to suit our needs and enjoy the results.  In this volume of five Nonfiction Minutes, you will read about just a few of our interactions with the natural world.
