May Day
Cheryl Harness

Spring has sprung here in the mid-Atlantic and students are anticipating the end of the year.  Keep 'em reading with this great May Day story!
English/Language Arts
Explore communication
In her final paragraph, Author Harness tells the reader about the origin of the international distress signal “Mayday.”  Ask your students to table talk about why this is important. How do we communicate when there are language barriers? Play a quick game of charades with the week’s vocabulary words and then hit the “books” to see what other international methods of communication exist.

Social Studies
Explore geography
This Minute gives you plenty of geographical concepts and places to visit.  Get out the world maps and globes. Have students locate the equator, then identify the hemispheres.  Find Egypt, India, Iran, Rome and Great Britain.  Point out the origin of the Celtic peoples.  Look at latitude and longitude and find the international date line. Highlight the importance of geographical location in the migration patterns and decision making of ancient cultures.

Explore labor history
This Minute touches on the history of labor regulations and the organization of labor unions to help workers gain fair working conditions and pay in the workplace.  Help them look into how children were part of the workplace, and what the conditions were like for those children. When did child labor laws change? Not as long ago as you might think!  This is a subject that will keep your students hooked!

STEM
Explore astronomy - seasons
Challenge your students to design a model to demonstrate the vernal and autumnal equinox and explain why and where seasonal changes occur on an annual basis.

Explore seasonal changes in nature
Look at the science behind seasonal changes in the natural world.  How do trees and flowers know when to bud and blossom? How do they behave in the equatorial regions?  Are they in bloom year round? Why do some animals hibernate and others do not? What kinds of adaptations happen in the animal world to adjust to seasonal changes?  Lots of science to explore here! If your students want more “spring” science, check out these 15 Scientific Reasons Spring is the Most Delightful Season - according to Mental Floss anyway!

Art
Explore Spring-related art projects
What better way to celebrate the arrival of Spring than to take a nature walk and collect some items for an interesting mixed media art project.  Let your students express their creativity by designing from and with nature. Need some inspiration? Check out some of ideas on this Pinterest page.
