Explore allusions
This is the perfect Minute to introduce or reinforce the concept of allusions. Beginning with the title, students should be able to identify the play on words referring back to Star Wars’ Luke Skywalker. Find the other allusions in the Minute in the final paragraph and challenge students to come up with a reason Author Siy may have made this choice. Guide them through the thinking, using your own think aloud strategy as needed. Post this Minute as an example of allusion on your wall, and invite students to add examples as they find them throughout the year.
STEM
Explore scientific classification systems
Information management is a critical skill in many disciplines, but science relies upon its many scales and organizational systems as a basis for discussion and theory testing. The cloud classification system described in this Minute is one of many such systems. Have your students think about organizational systems both within and outside the scientific world. How many can they name? Up the ante - make it a contest and students will come up with things you never thought of! As the list grows, see if there are ways to organize the organizational systems that make sense. Have students justify their choices. Host a culminating paideia seminar asking why organizational systems are critical in the scientific arena and what science might look like without them.
Explore the volcanic Ring of Fire
Invite your students to take a closer look at the Ring of Fire referenced in this Minute. How does that relate back to Vicki Cobb’s Minute Earth's Emergency Heat Valve: The Hurricane posted earlier this week? Can your students figure out a connection?
Art
Explore scientific art
Have your students do an image search of Luke Howard’s watercolors. They are amazing, and your students will think so, too. But more than art, they provided a scientific record before photography was an available medium. Have your students look for other artists who were also scientists - people like John James Audubon and Leonardo da Vinci. For older students, take a look at this Scientific American article Looking Back on 30 Science Artists in 30 Days.
Research Skills
Explore reliable resources - peer review
This Minute provides a great springboard for discussing the definition and importance of peer review when looking for reliable resources. Students will need to define the concept (or have it defined for them). Encourage them to explore the advanced search capabilities of many databases - they will find that many offer a checkbox that returns results that have undergone peer review - a standard in evaluating the reliability and veracity of research.
