International Waffle Day
Jim Whiting

Who doesn’t like a waffle? Jim Whiting shows us that they are so popular that two “holidays” are devoted to them. One is in the United States. The other is in the rest of the world.

English/Language Arts
Explore the main idea
Author Jim Whiting starts by introducing International Waffle Day and ends with the creation of the Nike Company. So what is the main idea of this minute and how does Jim carry this theme throughout the story?
Social Studies
Explore holidays
International Waffle Day is not a well-known holiday, but it also coincides with the beginning of spring in Sweden where the holiday originated. What other holidays are celebrated around the world that can be related to food? Students research the role waffles play in the Swedish diet, and why they were important to celebrate.
Explore geography
Sweden is a cold, northern European country. What other holidays originated in Sweden? To what region of the United States did many Swedish people immigrate, and why? What time period in U.S. history saw the highest rates of immigration from northern European countries?

STEM
Explore engineering and design
Everyone knows that the honeycomb pattern in waffles is delicious for holding melted butter and maple syrup. Bill Bowerman was inspired by this yummy design to develop the first waffle running shoes and launch Nike. What other designs have been inspired by food or other common things? What is biomimicry? What are some products that have been inspired by nature? Go to https://biomimicry.org/education/ to learn more about biomimicry and how educators can challenge their students.
