Explore poetry
If you ask your students about poetry, you may get a collective groan. Author Swinburne provides some great reminders that poetry can be a blast - and not only to read, but also to write! Have your students pick their favorite subject from a content area and write a poem about it. Then flip the game - have them choose something they find difficult or boring and write a poem about that! Share, celebrate, display and learn.
Explore figurative language
Have students do a close read of this Minute and pull out as many examples of literary devices as they can find. Do they see a metaphor? Personification? Dialog? Repetition? How about a simile? Alliteration? Allusion? Figurative language? It is all here. What a terrific practice tool. When you are finished finding, ask them to use some of these tricks in their own writing.
STEM
Explore biology - food chains
Time to have some fun. Set up a creative activity after exploring the concept of food chains and challenge your students to create their own idea of a food chain - using whatever materials they want. Not only will you get lots of great examples of food chains to support their learning, you will get free decor for your classroom. A win-win.
Explore energy - photosynthesis
This Minute present photosynthesis as a form of energy. Once your students understand the concept, ask them if they can design an experiment that demonstrates the concept. This problem solving task will reinforce the concepts and invite higher order thinking into your classroom.
Music
Explore genre - blues
Take a look at Author Swinburne’s final poems and use it to introduce or reinforce the genre of rhythm and blues music. Have students identify patterns and meters before playing music so they can identify the qualities that make blues so unique.
