Please consider End-of-Year Giving!
A Message from teaching librarian Karen Sterling
I got involved with iNK after making a donation three years ago when iNK started the Nonfiction Minutes. I followed the iNK blog for years, and when they ended the blog in June 2014 and decided to try out this idea of posting a daily Nonfiction Minute authored by their award-winning stable of fabulous nonfiction authors, I was all in. As a librarian, I shared the NF Minute with all of my teacher and librarian colleagues. Through a series of coincidences, I ended up speaking to CEO author and founder Vicki Cobb. The result was arranging for a group of iNK authors to visit our District via Field Trip Zoom and spend a professional development day with every middle school faculty member in the District. That day was a game changer for all of us. No longer did we have to feed our kids with textbook publishers' idea of nonfiction texts - voiceless and designed for test prep. Instead, we gained access to authentic, high-interest, even higher quality articles that built schema for students while building a love for great writing. The articles quickly became mentor texts in our ELA classrooms, and, with author-read audio files for every piece, gave differentiated access to every student.
I am still a middle school Library Media Specialist in addition to the Library Department Coordinator for eleven schools serving more than 7,000 students and 1,000 staff members. In my spare time, I write the Transfer to Teaching pieces to provide teachers with ideas of how to use Nonfiction Minutes in their classrooms. And I serve on the Board of Directors of iNK Think Tank. So I am still donating. I encourage you to join me in supporting this unique endeavor!
iNK Think Tank is a national nonprofit so any contributions you make are fully tax deductible. Content is currently donated by award-winning nonfiction children's book authors and professionally edited and presented. Even with these amazing authors donating content, we have costs - having this web presence for you and your students is a big one! Please consider adding us to your charitable end-of-year giving. As Jan Adkins tells you in the video below, once we begin purchasing content, it will cost about $500 a Minute to produce each one. That's one generous donor per Minute, or ten generous colleagues who understand the value of this product. A classroom can sponsor a new Minute, or maybe a school can run a penny drive to sponsor a Minute. Any and all donations make a big difference and are greatly appreciated. Help us help you, and consider donating today!
As we move toward the end of the year, relax, reflect, and think about the things that make a difference.
