Baking. Yum. What are these nice crunchy bits? Bugs, you say? Maybe I'll pass! Peggy Thomas had her arm shoulder deep in an elephant's rear end during the last Minute she authored, and now she is cooking up a storm with bugs as a main ingredient. She certainly sounds like someone I'd like to meet - but I might pass on the dinner invitation and meet at a nice restaurant instead! |
English/Language Arts
Explore procedural writing
Recipe writing is a great way for students to practice procedural writing. Use this Minute to give kids the basics, and then have them use their imaginations to write a recipe of their own.
Social Studies
Explore global diets
Author Thomas opens the door for exploring cultures around the world that augment their diets with insects. Have students brainstorm why and where they think people may eat bugs on a regular basis, and then follow up with the research (see below).
STEM
Explore the science of taste
What tastes good with what? It is random? Have your students experiment with sweet, salty, sour, bitter. Are there rules that work? That do not work? Are there certain areas of the tongue that sense some tastes more than others (hint - there are). This is a Minute that invites experimentation - though not necessarily with bugs!
Health and Wellness
Explore protein
Bugs are a great source of protein. Use this Minute to explore the advantages of protein, and how they help your body function.
Research Skills
Explore your library
You might be surprised to know that there are quite a few books out there about cooking and eating bugs and insects. Have your students search your school library catalog to see if your local libraries have any in stock. If they do, check them out. If not, ask your librarian to add some to the collectionk - after all, you never know what you will feel like for dinner!
