Roxie Munro is one of those creative types who can take an ordinary object and rethink it in something extraordinary. No surprise she was at the front of the volunteer line for getting herself re-envisioned on a 3D printer! Whether you follow Roxie’s art, books or social media feeds, you are always in for an artistic journey. Be sure to check out Roxie’s newest creation, Masterpiece Mix. |

- Use this Minute as a Mentor text for lead sentences. Have students play with changing the leads in their own or their partner’s writing so their lead sentences are questions. Does it make it better? Worse? Where else can you find questions as lead sentences?
Social Studies
Explore the economic impact of 3-D printers
- Does the addition of affordable 3D printing have any real impact on the world? Have students explore how new technologies can often have unintended consequences. Is there an impact on manufacturing costs? How about jobs? Students can look at this specific example, or they can explore backward to see the connection between new technologies and the state of the world or country’s economy.
STEM
Explore 3-D Printing
- What is this new technology being used for? Can you imagine more uses for 3D printing? If your school has a 3D printer, have you explored the possibility of scanning people for printing? Maybe you should!
Art
Explore the connection between 3-D printing and Art
- Art is not always the first thing that we think of when new technologies are developed - unless, of course, we are artists. Think about the possibilities of using this kind of device to take two dimensional pieces of digital art and making them three dimensional? Is there room for 3-D printing and sculpture? Bring the questions to your students and let their imaginations soar.
Explore the possibility of adding a 3-D printer to your school
- 3-D printers are getting more affordable every day. Consider having students research not only the technology behind these devices, but also the costs and benefits of schools owning them. Turn their efforts into a proposal to your local Parent group and who knows? Maybe you will be printing heads too!
